Fit Body Holiday Survival Guide! + Personalised Nutrition/Training Plans for 5 Woman Incredible readers!
Ha! I love this picture, mainly because I keep cracking up each time I imagine wearing something like that as a Christmas surprise for Enzo. Too much info possibly? Anyway ?
It is nearly Christmas Day! Are you excited? I am! I have to admit my excitement is primarily to do with making the day really special for my 4-year old daughter but there’s also that little kid inside of me still thinking WHERE ARE MY PRESENTS?! And yes … that part of me that cannot wait for all the yummy indulgence!
I’m completely of the mindset that we should all relax our rules around nutrition and our body at Christmas time. When I was in my early twenties I used to try and eat perfectly and I remember going for 10km runs in the morning early and anxiously worrying about how I was going to get through the day or season without getting fat. I’m all for going for a run if you want tomorrow morning, but that stuff is just crazy thinking, not to mention totally unnecessary.
So. This Christmas I hope you’ll join me in letting loose and giving yourself permission to just go with the flow. At the same time I know that you too probably do NOT want to wake up feeling like a complete blog sometime in mid Jan, and that’s why I’ve put together my Fit Bod Holiday Survival Guide.
Enjoy! Oh – and if you’ve been thinking about giving yourself a serious kick into gear in the NY I am offering 5 Woman Incredible readers an opportunity to have a personalised nutrition and/or training program create by me to get you started. I don’t often offer personalised coaching so if it does appeal then get in touch! More info below x
The Fit Bod Holiday Survival Guide
1. Decide in advance how you want to feel at the end of the day/week/season.
My ‘thing’ is I always want to feel proud of the choices I make for my body. At Christmas time I would NOT feel proud of trying to eat super clean and not indulge, so I don’t do that. On the other hand I certainly wouldn’t feel proud if I scarfed down everything I can get my grubby little hands on just because it’s Christmas!
2. Give that metabolism a morning wake-up call.
You don’t have to smash out a 10km run on Chrissie morning unless you want to, but nor do you have to start the day by diving into a Christmas stocking of lollies and not looking back! Why not go on a family walk or a sole walk in the morning? What a beautiful way to start the day. Perhaps you could talk or think about your Christmas wishes for the upcoming year. Or you could just bust out a quick circuit in the garden or lounge. Here’s a favourite bodyweight one of mine:
- 10 burpees
- 10 squats
- 10 each side lunges
- 10 push ups
Repeat x 4-10
Trust me – do that and you will have no qualms about what you eat all day!
3. Eat whatever the hell you want all day.
Seriously. Okay if you want one rule that will make a difference and keep you feeling good, include protein with each meal and particularly breaky. But honestly, even if you don’t do that then one day is NOT GOING TO KILL YOU. Don’t freak out. It’s Christmas. You can eat what you want for a day and survive with a fit body. As far as the season as a whole goes, yeah – start each day and ideally each meal with protein and you will pay WAY less for whatever else you want.
4. Alcohol
I’m not going to tell you how messy you should or should not get, but I will state the obvious which is that the more juice and stuff you add to your alcohol the more you will sugar spin yourself through the day. Wine and champers rule IMO.
5. Stop at some point and just be alone.
Take even 5 minutes just for you and stop. Breathe. What is this day really about for you, what are the holidays really about for you? For some people Christmas is a stressful and upsetting time, for others it’s a fun time. Whatever it is for you, is what it is. I know, profound right? But either way, give yourself the gift of some time just for you to reflect on whatever the heck you need to reflect on and just to break up the madness a little. Stress eating often comes about when you feel stressed or don’t give yourself space to breathe and just be.
6. What are you grateful for?
Gratitude is one of the most powerful tools we have to change our mind and state into one of excitement and positive hope. We all have so much to be grateful for, but it’s easy to forget that as we charge through the holidays trying to get everything done, look after everyone else and still have time for ourselves. I promise you that if you write a list of 10 things you are grateful for you will feel calmer and also happier about the day and week ahead. Which has a carry-on effect to the choices you make around food and your body – that’s the ‘fit bod’ link but it’s definitely not the main reason to be grateful!
7. If you’re freaking out about NOT following the rules, set a NY goal
We all know that the whole ‘I’ll start tomorrow’ thing is a bit of a crock, but that doesn’t mean we should be trying to start TODAY, today as I write it being Christmas Eve. Follow the principles in this blog and you’ll do just fine but if you do want to know you can be accountable and really kick your own butt in the NY then set a goal now and GET ACCOUNTABLE by telling someone. If you really want to kick it to the next level email me at kat@womanincredible.com as I am offering 5 Woman Incredible readers personalised fat loss nutrition and/or training programs going into the NY.
8. Throw in a green smoothie meal or snack
Through the holidays we often snack on things like nuts and dried fruit – eat too many of these and you will start to feel rather rotund and bloated. Throw in a green smoothie somewhere along the way as a meal or snack and you’ll not only break the all-day eating routine but you’ll feel super virtuous and cheery. Promise ?
9. Grab a handy kid or fun loving adult and just HAVE FUN!
I mean really – you should probably just ignore this whole post and do whatever the hell you please all day. It’s Christmas! But since we’re talking ideas for surviving the holidays and still feeling fit and happy, having fun is definitely a priority! Do some outdoor sport (cricket in the garden is an Aussie Christmas rule isn’t it?), dance around to Christmas music, play silly games. Laugh like your life depends on it ?
10. It’s all going to be okay!
Whatever Christmas and the holidays look like for you, remember this – it will pass and it will all be okay. You are not in fact going to gain 10kg by eating whatever you want for a day or even a week. You’re not going to actually kill or be killed by another family member. Trust in your ability to make good choices for yourself as an adult, don’t be afraid to let your hair down a little, eat whatever you please and when in doubt do a few burpees, smash a green smoothie, and go on a solo walk for 15 minutes. You’ll be ready to take on the world, or at least your family again ?
And finally, of course!
MERRY CHRISTMAS BEAUTIFUL! I’m so grateful to have you in the Woman Incredible community, I’m so proud of you for the work you’ve done for YOU this year, and I can’t wait to keep working with you next year!
